With the bar scene coming of age in the inner city
and throughout the state, watering holes now have
an appeal that extends beyond "after 5 drinks" on
a Friday. Pull up a stool and find out why they have
the tick of approval from function organisers.
From an event co-ordinator's point of view, Perth's steadily growing
collection of small and boutique bars are parties-in-a-box just raring to
be unleashed. Within these venues' four walls one will find everything an
event needs to launch from go to whoa: professionally trained staff, a pumping
sound system, an eclectic selection of drinks and instant atmosphere if you hold
your soiree on a busy evening.
And can you imagine the kudos you'll collect when people find out that
you're having your function at the hottest spot in town? There's something so,
so gratifying about being able to strut to the front of the line, all because you're
there for the right person's birthday.
Many bars will also make themselves available to be hired out exclusively for
the whole night -- even on nights they are not usually open. It will depend on the
number of guests you have and what you want to spend, but most bars are happy
to try to accommodate your needs and are open to negotiations. Several also
have separate rooms, adjacent to the main bar, available for hire.
There's a lot to be said for the convenience of a well-stocked and
internationally sourced drinks fridge. In some instances, passionate owners and
bartenders even import some of their drinks themselves, making theirs the only
venue in Perth you'll be able to order certain tipples.
Different venues have different options available when it comes to
organising drinks. Although pay-as-you-go is a popular option, packages can be
organised based on duration and bar tabs can also be set up to ensure evenings
start off on the right foot.
And the best thing about having your party at a boutique bar?
No more pushing through the sleep barrier as you count down the seconds --
the moment those eyelids start feeling a little too heavy, simply excuse yourself
("I'm just going out to get some fresh air") and quietly hail the next cab.
You've got the party started, let your guests keep it burning through the night
while you go home (or to another do) and put your feet up.
Belgian Beer Cafe Westende
In the west end of Murray Street lies an international hot spot for people to gather
and enjoy top Belgian beers and modern European fare -- it's hard to turn down
the venue's famous pomme frites! Belgian Beer Cafe is constantly bursting with
people and has several spaces suitable for functions from sundowners and cocktail
functions to corporate dinners. This little slice of Belgium is also an award winner
having taken out AHA's Hotel Innovation award in 2008 and AHA's Best Themed
Pub in 2007.
The Cabin Wine Bar & Bistro
The Cabin Wine Bar & Bistro is a recent and revolutionary addition to Perth's small
bar scene. The brainchild of West Australian company Darkhorse Developments,
this cosy and intimate venue overlooks Mount Hawthorn's cafe strip. The Cabin
offers quality produce, an extensive premium beverage selection, exceptional
service, value for money and pretence-free luxury. With its eclectic decor and
quality, old-school service, it's no wonder The Cabin has rapidly gained popularity
among Perth's small bar collective.
Since its inception in 2001, Carnegies has been one of Perth's most happening
venues, pumping out party tunes until the early hours of the morning. Walls
adorned with rock memorabilia add to the venue's celebratory atmosphere. But
what some people don't realise is that this buzzing bar also offers great food.
Combine that with attentive staff, two different function areas and a prime location
in the centre of the city and you'll soon understand why Carnegies remains an ever-
popular party venue.
The Ellington Jazz Club
Opened in March 2009, the Ellington Jazz Club is the product of a long-held
dream. Owners and jazz-lovers Graham Wood and Bernard Kong wanted to create
a venue that would treat deserving artists with respect, while allowing patrons to
see the world's best jazz musicians in action. Perthites have been flocking to the
hole-in-the-wall venue, which consists of two levels -- the main performance area is
downstairs, while three separate areas upstairs are ideal for functions. The opening
of this venue marks a new era in Perth nightlife.
Ess Bar & Kitchen
If you're looking for a bar that's chic in appearance and friendly in atmosphere,
Ess Bar & Kitchen's the one for you. Tastefully decked out with lounge chairs and
ottomans, Ess Bar's vibe is chilled out without being subdued. The expert chefs
deliver a global tapas menu that's sure to impress and there's a la carte dining for
something a little more formal. A word of advice, though -- don't leave without
trying the steak sandwich.
Slick and stylish with a killer location in the heart of the CBD, The George is exactly
what Perth has been crying out for. The brainchild of Melburnian owners John
Ahern and Steve Garcia, this bar-cum-restaurant attracts not only suits from the
buildings nearby, but also all those who appreciate great food and drinks aplenty in
a warm, sophisticated ambience. And with several versatile areas within the venue,
The George lends itself perfectly to corporate and social functions.
