Home' F and V : WAs Best Functions and Venues 2012 Contents Forget the Academy Awards: Festival de Cannes is the world’s
most prestigious motion-picture event. It was initially designed
to rival the Venice Film Festival, but has become legendary in
its own right. From its humble beginnings after the Second
World War, the event quickly gained international kudos due
to its mix of budding, seasoned and acclaimed talent, both in
front of and behind the camera. Now each year in May, 200,000
filmmakers, stars and fans descend upon the small Riveria resort
town of Cannes, France. Up for grabs, the coveted Palme d’Or
– or Golden Palm – for best film. For true style, substance and
glamour, Cannes consistently delivers.
WHY IT WORKS
Artistic quality | Cannes showcases high-calibre films from
top international directors (previous entrants included Alfred
Hitchcock and Orson Welles).
Style stakes | The fashion on the red carpet is more adventurous.
The reel thing | The film stars are just that – credible stars, not
just flash-in-the-pan celebrities.
For a fortnight each year in February and March, 30,000 people a day
flock to Venice to witness the famous Carnevale di Venezia. One of the most
recognisable symbols of the festival, its ornate masks were made popular as
far back as the 14th century. Their main allure was to prominent social figures,
who could conceal their identities as they pursued hedonistic pleasures.
Today, they’re just as popular for their stylish, eye-catching looks.
WHY IT WORKS
Old-world glamour | Revellers can be swept up in the elegance and
intrigue provided by the exquisite masks and sumptuous costumes.
Non-stop entertainment | Theatrical performances, music and dancing,
ancient games and, of course, masked balls continue day and night for
Venetians and visitors alike.
