HAPPY NEW YEAR
Attended by 1.5 million people and broadcast around the world, Sydney’s New Year’s celebration is
known as Australia’s biggest public party.
New Year’s Eve effectively sells Sydney to the world, and Imagination Australia’s 2011 event landed
total PR exposure worth $9.7 million. Overseas, the story of Sydney as the New Year’s capital of the world
received over 1000 media mentions in Europe and US alone. Last year’s theme (Time to Dream) didn’t
disappoint, possessing all the glamour and gloss of the 21st century. Working with design luminary Marc
Newson, who dreamt up the slick endless rainbow logo, Imagination showcased Sydney as a creative hub.
The iconic fireworks displays fired approximately 11,000 shells, 25,000 shooting comets and 100,000
individual pyrotechnic effects. The fireworks themselves weighed a giant seven tonnes, and 14 shipping
containers were needed to transport all of the equipment. Twelve computers were used to digitally launch
the fireworks on the Harbour Bridge, barges and buildings, shooting 10,000 cues.
Imagination specialises in huge events, but in terms of global broadcast events, this must be the biggest!
