erth Town Hall offers the people of
Western Australia the unique opportunity
to celebrate in the splendour of the
Victorian Gothic style.
Completed in 1870, the venue is Australia’s
only capital-city town hall built by convicts,
and Australia’s only medieval-style town hall.
The Hall’s chief architect, Richard Roach
Jewell, was part of the Victorian Gothic
Revival movement. Many visitors have amused
themselves wondering whether the coiled rope
and broad arrow motifs on the watch towers
were marks the convicts left on the building.
From the beginning, the Main Hall has been
used for a variety of purposes, including civic
functions, plays, exhibitions, concerts, balls,
weddings, banquets and public meetings, as
well as private and charity events.
Unadorned, the Town Hall’s polished jarrah
floors and a 15m ceiling lend a touch of drama to
any occasion. The building also inspires creative
theming for many types of events –
from classical concerts and glamour fashion
shows to Rocky Horror and Da Vinci Code-themed
events. When the lancet windows on stage are
exposed it gains a cathedral-like ambience for
wedding ceremonies and receptions.
Sound systems and stage lighting, a caterer’s
prep kitchen, a grand piano, exhibition
panelling and climate control are just a few
finishing touches that will set your event apart
from the rest.
The 10.6 million-dollar restoration of Perth
Town Hall, completed in two stages in 2002
and 2005, won the Royal Australian Institute
of Architecture (WA chapter) Heritage Council
Conservation Award in both years.
